Local Mortlake info

–          Mortlake is situated on the south bank of the river Thames, between Kew and Barnes, with East Sheen to the south.

–          The Mortlake Brewery existed since the fifteenth century. It has been acquired by different people and companies during the years. The Brewery last became part of Scottish Courage. It is now leased to Anheuser-Busch Europe ltd that produces Budwiser pale lager. The Stag  Brewery is expected to be closed in 2014.

–          St Mary Magdalen’s Roman Catholic Chuch is a local church in Mortlake SW14, It is situated in North Worple Way. The priest of the church is Father Richard Whinder.  The church was designed by Gilbert Blount in 1852. The cemetery includes a mausoleum that contains the tombs of Sir Richard Burton and his wife lady Isabel Burton. The tomb was designed by Lady Burton after the dead of her husband and it has the form of a life –size stone tent.

– Mortlake is a finish point for Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race.  The finish point of the race is marked by the University Boat Race stone which is just downstream of Chiswick Bridge. The boat race is very popular event in the British sporting calendar. It gathered over a quarter of a million people watching the race life from the banks of the river and millions on television.
