How to clean laminate floors

Many people love the look of wooden floors, but may not be able to have the real thing because of cost or the time needed to keep wood looking its best. For those individuals, the next best thing to having wooden floors is installing laminate flooring. Laminate is a wood substitute that to the untrained eye can be easily mistaken for the real thing. This type of floor can be dry or ‘wet’ cleaned depending on traffic and brand of flooring used. Laminate flooring should not be made excessively wet, and as such, a damp mop, not a wet one, should be used. If you apply cleaning liquid use one that evaporates quickly.

Because it is durable and resistant to most types of stains, cleaning laminate floors is relatively easy. However, to avoid a streaky floor always sweep or dry mop, before you start cleaning with a damp mop or rag. This will get rid of the dirt which is what cause the streaks. There are a number of different ways to clean laminate floors, and I’ll look at a few below.

Vinegar

For a really clean laminate floor vinegar is always a great choice. Mix a solution of vinegar and water, spray the floor and wipe with a damp mop. Work in sections to ensure that the water and vinegar solution does not soak through.

You can also mix the vinegar with rubbing alcohol and a little dishwashing liquid or hand soap. Try three or four drops, as too much soap, especially if harsh, will dull the finish.

Water

Plain hot water can be used to clean laminate floors, leaving them clean and streak free.

Commercial cleaners

There are many commercial cleaners on the market made especially for laminate floors. Talk to the installer or manufacturer to know which they recommend for your type of laminate.

Other tips for keeping your laminate floor looking good:

· If you need to quickly clean just a small area of the floor, spray some Windex or other ammonia-based glass cleaner on the area and wipe with a mop or paper towels.

· Clean up spills as soon after they occur as you can

· Never push or pull furniture across the floor; moving furniture in this way will result in unsightly scratches. Also, place heavy furniture on casters to minimize gouging by legs

· Mats at doorways and other heavy traffic areas will keep dirt and normal wear and tear to a minimum

· Do not buff or polish laminate flooring

· Even if you are not able to do any real cleaning, sweeping off the laminate floor at least once or twice per week is recommended

As with other household items check the manufacturer’s instructions before you begin cleaning. Remember that laminate comes in various styles and types, as such when it comes to cleaning one size doesn’t fit all.

With proper maintenance most laminate floors are guaranteed to last up to twenty-five years.
